If you can find a source for metadata online, you can save a regular bibliographic item using the Save to Zotero button and drag the attachment item onto the new item. ![]() If Zotero isn't able to retrieve metadata for the PDF, you'll be left with just the standalone attachment. For other documents, while Zotero can sometimes extract basic information (title, author), you shouldn't expect that - anything can be distributed as a PDF, but that doesn’t mean there’s any standard metadata available for it. This should work well for most academic PDFs (though it may sometimes yield lower-quality metadata than using the Save to Zotero button on the article page). When you add a PDF directly, Zotero will initially save it as a standalone attachment and then automatically attempt to retrieve metadata for it and create a parent item. Standalone attachments can't have bibliographic metadata or child notes, so in most cases you'll want to convert them to child items under regular parent items. You can also add an attachment to an existing item by clicking the paperclip button in the Zotero toolbar and selecting “Attach Stored Copy of File…” or “Attach Link to File…”, or you can add a standalone attachment by clicking the green plus sign ( ) and choosing “Store Copy of File…” or “Link to File…”.Īttachments can be either child items or standalone attachments. ![]() ![]() If you have a local PDF or other file on your computer - for example, if you received a file via email - you can drag it to Zotero, either onto an existing item to create a child attachment or between items to create a standalone attachment. The Save to Zotero button will usually save high-quality metadata and also automatically download the relevant PDF if you have access to it. If a website isn't importing properly, please report it on the Zotero Forums and provide the webpage URL.Īs explained above, when possible, we recommend saving items using the Save to Zotero button in your browser from the primary webpage (e.g, a journal article's abstract page) rather than adding PDFs directly. You can choose an alternative translator by right-clicking on the Zotero save button (or the page background in Safari) and choosing one of the supplied options. Zotero will generally choose the best translator available for each site automatically. For example, importing an item from the publisher website will generally yield much better data than importing from Google Scholar. Metadata for the same item may vary in quality across sites providing it. (For more information, see our compatible websites list.) By default, translator updates are automatically installed, independent of Zotero updates. Zotero recognizes almost all library catalogs, most news sites, research databases and scientific publishers. ![]() For many sites, Zotero has website-specific “translators” to obtain the best quality metadata. I learned about the game through videos from PaperBatVG, who had an early copy and had been doing a playthrough (he was hiding the jungle area as a surprise for release, at the request of the devs IIRC). I remember the day terraria came out like it was yesterday: Yeah, I started as a terribly cringy kid, but now I have a small online community I can hang out with whenever I want, and that's pretty great. I still play Terraria with some of my friends from this site to this day. At first it was just me and a few other people hosting a poorly-handled Roleplay group about fighting, and eventually I learned how to host actual terraria servers. A month after I joined the site, the switch to TCF was made, and I continued posting random stupid suggestions I came up with and learning more about how to make this game balanced.Īfter a while I started actually making friends here. Most of them were pretty awful, but it helped me become a part of the community. ![]() I stayed on TerrariaOnline rather than just leaving after that first embarrassment, because I had so many ideas of how to improve the game and I just had to share them. (I really did not understand the concept of versions and updates back then.) That was in August of 2014, so. This annoyed me, so I decided to make an account on what was then TerrariaOnline, just to make a thread about how there should be more tinkers in the mobile version. I was really obsessed with the idea of the Tinkerers Workshop for some reason, and since Terraria Mobile wasn't even in 1.1 yet, I couldn't craft things like Lightning Boots, even though the wiki said I could. I got a few of my other friends to play it, and I constantly read wiki articles on how to get the best stuff, various strategies, etc.Įventually I realized that some stuff in the wiki articles were not in the game I was playing. (Yes, this was the infamous Terraria Animated Series.) I wasn't really sure what to think of the videos themselves, but the game looked interesting and I had a ton of app store credit, so I decided to download Terraria to my ipad and just try it out. ElementAnimation was the first youtube channel I ever subscribed to, and for about a year after that, I continued using youtube solely for watching an endless amount of Minecraft videos.Ī year or so later, ElementAnimation started making animated videos involving a game I had never seen before: Terraria. I was around 12 years old at the time, and I totally ate it up. Eventually, those same friends introduced me to a Youtube channel called ElementAnimation, popular at the time for very well-animated Minecraft videos. ![]() My neighbors were playing minecraft constantly on their phones, so I joined in so I could play with them. Ironically, it all started with Minecraft. Still, this memory stands out as my most memorable and emotional experience in the game. I didn't play that world much longer, and it along with my beloved thousand-hour 1.2 world were erased when my playstation became (ironically) corrupted and I accidentally cloud-saved over my profiles. and I heard the chirping of birds as butterflies began to flutter through my shattered windows. Like the Armistice, an eerie silence filled the cups of my headphones as the pounding waves of Slimers and Corruptors instantly vanished. As I approached it I began spraying in wild circles and watched in amazement and joy as that hulking hunk of wood shrapnel and chest rows rapidly became green and pure again. With my newly found Lightning Boots I raced across the Corrupt wasteland towards my home on the right side of the map. By this point it really looked dead- vines and thorns everywhere, random dirt mounds from my attempts to section-off enemies, and random chunks of exploded terrain and missing walls (I think enemies could still break blocks at that point, or maybe I had just gotten bomb-happy in a few scuffles). I grabbed that sucker and dragged it back to my decrepit first world with my friends in tow. My eyes grew misty as they came to rest on a spare Clentaminator. I hopped on with a few online friends and discovered they had chests containing things I'd never seen before. Eventually I became totally lost and didn't play again until years later when I came across reports of new content. I would sneak out and try to grab just a bit of ore or a new item. Since I had no way of sustaining NPCs and each day was a constant battle just to open the front door, it made the early hardmode period much more punishing. When I first entered hardmode I experienced the misfortune of having built my home in the Corruption's designated spawning location. ![]() VBoxManage setextradata “Machine Name” “VBoxInternal/Devices/smc/0/Config/DeviceKey” “ourhardworkbythesewordsguardedpleasedontsteal(c)AppleComputerInc” VBoxManage setextradata “Machine Name” “VBoxInternal/Devices/efi/0/Config/DmiBoardProduct” “Iloveapple” VBoxManage setextradata “Machine Name” “VBoxInternal/Devices/efi/0/Config/DmiSystemVersion” “1.0” VBoxManage setextradata “Machine Name” “VBoxInternal/Devices/efi/0/Config/DmiSystemProduct” “iMac11,3” Now replace the “Machine Name” in the Virtual Machine and enter the following code. After that is taken care of, find the CMD tool from start menu and choose ‘Run as Administrator’.Click on OK to ensure that the changes have been saved. But in my sentences, I couldn’t get that to work if I put it all together on one line. In Soulver’s great help files, they say that you can simply write + 20% and it should calculate that as though you’ve said x 1.2. It’s not boring, it’s colorful!īack to math! When I was working on the example of a meal split three ways with a tip added, I wasn’t able to come up with a natural-language way of writing it all in one line. But almost as important, it makes the app visually very pleasing. Most importantly it allows you to see at a glance how your calculations are being interpreted. ![]() All units, such as /mile or $ turn bright pink. Any numbers in your comments will not turn bright blue. All numbers turn bright blue showing Soulver has identified them as numbers. Everywhere you use that variable it will also be bright green. When you define a variable (simply by writing a word or words and writing = after them), the variable name turns bright green. I want to take a break from the concepts of using Soulver and talk about how pretty it is. ![]() In our driving example, if I write Govt Reimbursement = $0.54/mile, I can now use that as a variable in my calculation on mileage costs. You can even use numbers in your comments and Solver will ignore them. Soulver also converts *2 into x 2.īut later you’ll look at that line and wonder, “Why did I write x 2?” Soulver allows comments, so you simply use two forward slashes and write whatever you want. Instead of going in and editing numbers in a tiny cell, just write * 2 at the end of the line and you’ll see a new total in the right column of $18.36. For example, to calculate your mileage reimbursement at the US government’s standard of 54¢ per mile, in Soulver you would simply write:ĭrove to the airport 17 miles x $0.54/mileĪnd in the right column, you’ll see printed $9.18. But what if you could write in human terms instead of complex equations and create a beautiful expense report? Soulver with variables and calculations ![]() In order to do these calculations, you could pull out the glorious program that is Excel, or use the pretend spreadsheet program Numbers. And you had to pay for the conference you attended on a per-day basis. You went to dinner with colleagues on the trip so you need to split the cost including tip. You drove to the airport and expect to be reimbursed for your mileage. Imagine you’ve gone on a business trip and you want to capture your expenses. The center panel is where the real beauty comes into play. You can name them, create folders using a little plus button in the bottom left, and drag your note sheets around to organize them in those folders. Soulver opens with a left sidebar which you can collapse, where you’ll keep all of your notes. Soulver with folders, pretty colors & totals There’s also an iOS version of Soulver 2 for $2.99 in the App Store, but I didn’t test out that version. Soulver 3 for Mac is $19.95 US from now till June 30th, at which point the price will go up to $29.95. I’ll see if I can capture it in my own words as I go through Soulver for you. That is a technically correct description of the app but it sure doesn’t capture the beauty and uniqueness of the app. The tag line for Soulver is that it’s a smart notepad with a built-in calculator. The app is called Soulver from soulver.app. Once in a blue moon, you find an app that has a completely new approach and a unique interface that is delightful. It seems that in a few minutes you can figure them out because they all work pretty much the same. I’m starting to feel like applications for the Mac never surprise me anymore. |
